Voluntary accreditation schemes for lift-truck training
Accreditation is voluntary in the instance of lift-truck training and learning, but is something which is immensely beneficial to a company as a whole. Schemes are now in place which allow for voluntary accreditation to the standard outlined in the L117 ACOP, which are put in place with the intention of:
- setting and maintaining a consistently professional standard
- aiding employers to choose training organisations or lift-truck companies who offer training of a high standard
How do the schemes work?
Working by the following of course syllabuses approved by the accrediting body, companies’ workers will carry out said training in suitable premises such as dedicated centres for training or even areas at their employer’s premises.
With two levels of instructor working on behalf of accrediting bodies, workers will be “brought up to speed” with the correct practice and any relevant developments during their training. Accredited instructors are able to provide training whilst consulting course syllabi given to them by the accrediting body. They are valid in their position for five years, following which they are reassessed. Registered instructors are trained and tested to the same standard, with the qualification also lasting five years, but in this instance training may not be as uniform as it is for accredited instructors.
How do these schemes benefit companies?
Though voluntary, employers who use accredited training providers (ATPs) are able to guarantee the utmost expertise of their workers. The training provided will be of a standard described in the L117 ACOP, giving companies an edge over their competitors who are not accredited in this fashion as their expertise, quality and sheer high standard of work will appeal to a larger number of customers than a company without such accreditation.
As well as this, since accreditation means higher levels of expertise, these schemes allow companies to charge higher figures for their lift-truck provision and operation, since they have a better knowledge of the technology than those companies without accreditation.
