LPG Storage – Stay Safe

The world of forklift truck use and upkeep is one fraught with strict health and safety legislation, operating guidelines and similar regulations, ensuring that drivers and employers avoid dangerous practice and potential injury.

The fuels used in lifting truck equipment (commonly LPG or diesel) represent one such regulated area, and mistreatment of it presents a number of health risks.

LPG

LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas, is a fuel often found in heating appliances and certain vehicles (as well as some refrigerants and aerosols) and takes the form of a colourless, odourless liquid that easily evaporates into a gas due to a very low boiling point.

One of the biggest dangers of LPG use in the forklift industry is its tendency to readily explode when it comes into contact with both oxygenated air and a source of ignition, and for this reason, safe storage of LPG becomes paramount to maintaining safety.

Safe Storage

There are various steps that should be followed by employers and responsible persons in regards to safe LPG storage. As a fundamental rule, all LPG canisters should be kept in a secure – preferably outdoors – area that’s well ventilated. This should reduce the danger of any explosion that occurs affecting occupied buildings, as well as lessening the chances of LPG coming into contact with heat or ignition sources.

Keeping the LPG cylinders upright is also vital, and making sure that they are secured in this position – either attached to the wall or in suitable containers – is the best way of doing so. ‘No Smoking’ signs should be prominently displayed around all canisters, and keeping the area clear of leaves and debris will reduce the amount of fire accelerant material in the event of an explosion.

Other Dangers

As well as the risk of explosion, LPG also presents various other dangers if incorrectly handled. The fumes given off when the fuel is burned, if not released into a well-ventilated area, can be potentially hazardous to human health, with the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning high.

As with the gas found in our cookers, LPG often has an odour added to it to alert people nearby to leaks, but by the time the smell is detected it could be too late, so always ensure adequate ventilation before use.

If you are uncertain in any way as to where your responsibilities lie in relation to LPG, or for further information regarding safe storage or usage practices, your LPG supplier should be equipped with the knowledge to help.
