Simple Tips For Safe Forklift Operation

Forklifts are essential to the smooth running of a number of different types of business. Used safely, they eliminate a great deal of manual heavy lifting and speed up the movement of freight from one place to another. However, the key here is their safe operation. Following these tips will point you in the right direction.

The role of the operator

Forklift safety can be divided into three main components; the operator, the machine and
the environment. The operators are the first and most crucial of the three as they are making the decisions that will affect the other two components. The operators should:

  • Be suitably trained and carry all valid accreditation
  • Wear appropriate clothing that fits properly (loose clothing can get caught in the controls and working parts). Attire should also include a hard hat, high visibility jacket, and safety boots or shoes
  • Ensure that hands are clean and dry to minimize the risk of them slipping off controls and potentially causing an accident
  • Always use a safety belt provided and adjust mirrors before starting work
  • Always be aware of the type, weight, and height of the load
  • Personally check that loads are balanced and secured properly
  • Always be aware of their surrounding and follow all onsite regulations, including speed limits
  • Use the horn to alert others of their presence, particularly where visibility is limited
  • Report all mechanical problems, near misses, accidents, and concerns in line with the workplaces health and safety policy

The importance of the machine

A forklift, like any other machine, works best when operated by a trained professional and is well maintained. Maintaining a forklift involves both mechanical maintenance and ensuring its proper use at all times. Safe operating includes:

  • Carrying out routine checks prior to beginning work – checks should include brakes, steering, controls, warning lights, lifting equipment, and tyres
  • Not continuing with operations if a fault is noted
  • Not lifting more than the stated load, or carrying unstable or poorly balanced loads
  • The use of appropriate fuel and refuelling only in a safe and designated space
  • Ensuring that the forklift is properly turned off and stored when not in use

Understanding the environment

The care and upkeep of the forklift are primarily the responsibility of the driver, so too are his or her own actions. The surrounding environment is the responsibility of the entire workforce. While the driver needs to be aware of his surroundings, others need to take responsibility for how they behave around the forklift, and the loads are being moved. To this end, workers should:

  • Ensure the workplace is tidy and free from hazards and unnecessary obstacles
  • Ensure they are visible to the operator when working in the same area
  • Not request to be lifted or carried on the forklift
  • Not walk under loads when they are being lifted or carried
  • Inform the driver of any potential problems or hazards they see

By following these simple tips, businesses can make the best use of their forklifts and run smoother and safer operations.
