Temporary Christmas workers lacking basic skill sets

In today’s society, there is an ever-growing popularity for hiring temporary workers over the festive period to provide assistance with over-worked existing staff in stores, restaurants and cafes bursting at the seams with custom and stock.

This increase in temporary staffing is unsurprising, as with the British public due to set a record breaking online shopping spree in the lead up to Christmas this year, warehouses which do not have enough workers to deal with stock and orders will fall short and suffer the consequences with added stress and higher incidents of mistakes made during the processing of customers’ orders. However, with the need for huge influxes of temporary staff comes the possibility for a lower caliber of staff entering into these workforces.

William Walker of Walker Logistics, an online fulfilment specialist, spoke of the spike in temporary staffing, stating that “Many companies operating in the logistics industry rely on short-term additions to their permanent staff to ensure that spikes in their clients’ output are met”. He then went on to talk about the busy periods of Christmas and Easter, noting that “the caliber of the people that temporary staff agencies are able to provide drops dramatically and this can put a strain on order picking and fulfilment processes”.

On account of this observation, Walker Logistics themselves have tried to counteract this potential issue. They have done this by ensuring they increase their permanent warehouse workforce, as well as planning staffing needs at the earliest possibility using forecasting techniques and approximations. Through acting in this more organised, calculated manner, the company have been able to take on only the most skilled and suitable temporary staff during their busy periods such as Christmas.

In order to do this, the company have screened potential temporary staff using one simple question: how many of the staff would you make full-time workers? By using this question, companies taking on temporary staff will be able to make an informed decision on who is truly suitable and up to the task of upholding their business’ standards adequately during perhaps the most challenging periods faced by the company annually.

Therefore, in order to ensure quality of temporary staff and the industry standards as well as those of the individual company being upheld, it is advisable to take time and care over choosing the right temporary staff for the job.
