What is the Role of a Vehicle Banksman?

At a building site, loading bay, warehouse or any other location where large vehicles are in operation, it’s vitally important that there is someone on the ground providing drivers and pedestrians alike with extra eyes and ears. This person is known as the vehicle banksman, and is a key figure in maintaining a high level of health and safety onsite – particularly when it comes to loading and unloading large cranes where the operator’s vision may be obscured.

So what does the Role of a Vehicle Banksman Incorporate?

Using some form of communication with a vehicle’s operator, whether a radio link up

guiding loading and unloading, and general marshalling of traffic. Where reversing is difficult, due to restricted space or imbalance in the vehicle, the banksman will often find an alternative; either laying out a one-way system or creating a circular route between loading and unloading points.

Operating large vehicles with limited mobility presents many dangers in an environment where pedestrians and other workers are often preoccupied with their own tasks, and forklift driving is no exception.

Banksman Training

Training of a vehicle banksman must be thorough and detailed, covering all of the potential responsibilities they may have in a building site or warehouse environment.

It should include tutelage regarding the popular causes of accidents when dealing with

heavy vehicles, the steps that should be taken to prevent these accidents, a full understanding of the operation of the vehicles in under their guidance, and the methods by which they should marshal the movement and manoeuvres of the vehicles.

Benefits of a Vehicle Banksman

Statistics show that almost 25% of all deaths that involve a heavy vehicle at work happen during reversing – something that can be easily avoided with the inclusion of a banksman.

It’s not just injury to people that a banksman can help to stop: damage can be prevented too, both to the vehicle itself and any other onsite equipment that may come into its path. This could potentially save businesses thousands in replacing machinery and vehicles, while simultaneously helping them to meet health and safety requirements.
