Forklift Training Procedures

While forklifts are extremely useful devices that are employed within a number of construction and industrial roles, they can also be dangerous if operated by inexperienced personnel. While this danger may be offset by their rather diminutive appearance, the fact of the matter is that grievous injuries and even deaths have occurred as a result of their improper operation. So, there are a number of forklift training procedures that need to be recognised.

Forklift safety

A Full Check of the Operating Systems

While following protocol is essential, the operator will need to make absolutely certain that all critical systems are in working order. This is actually covered by both the LOLER and the PUWER regulations. Still, some of the metrics that need to be examined before each use will include (but are not limited to):

  • Steering
  • Safety systems
  • The overhead guard
  • Wheels Tyres
  • Traction
  • The counterweight

All of these metrics are critical in ensuring proper operation of the vehicle in question, and methods for checking them should be included in forklift training.

The Training

Training will need to take place in a supervised environment by a qualified instructor. Not only will this include basic operational skills, but the driver will need to be aware of how to handle any possible attachments that may be used in the workplace environment. This training should regularly be updated to make certain that the driver has a working knowledge of all relevant procedures.

Of course, it is also compulsory to record the results of this training. This can help to target any weak points, further enhancing safety and reliability.

Environmental Concerns

Many needless injuries occur as a result of operating the forklift in an area that is cluttered or otherwise full of obstructions. All aisles need to be wide enough to guarantee that the unit will not collide with existing materials; particularly when turning or backing up. Additionally, one-way paths will be essential in the event that more than one forklift is being operated in a specific area.

Another key safety concern will revolve around the driver in question. An operational awareness needs to be present at all times. This will help to avoid potential collisions with other workers or even third-party individuals who may be in the area. This risk can by further reduced with the inclusion of audible caution equipment and visual systems such as warning lights.

Maintenance

Proper training will also centre around the proper maintenance of the forklift. Should hydraulics, brakes or other systems fail, the possibility of injury or death is a very real risk. So, all operators and supervisors need to be familiar with regular repair techniques. The entire unit will also need to be given a thorough overhaul periodically. Should an issue be found, it can be dealt with accordingly. Not only will this greatly enhance workplace safety, but a minor repair can be performed before it becomes a major (and costly) problem.

These are a handful of the main things that forklift training will entail. As health and safety regulations become more stringent, it is essential that this education be approached with a serious mind set. Thankfully, there are a number of institutions throughout the United Kingdom which offer ample levels of training.
