Fork Truck Safety

When it comes to preventing fork truck accidents, there are a number of good practices in place which ensure the utmost safety of these vehicles in all their functions. Here, we explain a bit more about the National Fork Truck Safety Conference, and why it is so important.

This year’s conference is to be held at Loughborough University in the East Midlands. Taking place this month, on 23rd September, the event will focus on peer-to-peer presentations discussing the best practice for using fork trucks. This exchange of information is a bid to lower the currently high levels of injuries and damage in all sectors.

What will be covered

During the conference, the speakers will be highlighting the importance of correct safety procedures when using fork trucks. Through the talks, those attending will be enlightened by the central idea and purpose of the conference, which is to install the attitude that anything less than best practice is simply unacceptable.  

The conference is based upon the theme of 360-degree safety, a stance which reflects the holistic approach to fork truck safety measures as driven by the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA). This approach to fork truck safety is advocated through this conference, as well as through the online site set up in a bid to promote it – the Safer Site Programme.

FLTA Chief Executive Peter Harvey, speaking of the event, claimed that it should seriously benefit companies, as well as “inform, inspire and motivate managers and supervisors in companies of every size and in every sector”.

The day’s plan

The sessions throughout the day will include:

• Keynote speeches courtesy of senior representatives from Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
• Technical papers on key issues will be discussed at length
• The presentation of a handful of case studies by managers who have themselves improved the FLT safety track records of their companies
